The two numbers that matter

Roof load capacity is published as two separate figures, and confusing them is the most common mistake we see. Both come from your vehicle manufacturer, not from us.

So the tent's weight has to fit under your dynamic rating, while the tent plus everyone sleeping in it has to fit under your static rating. Most vehicles clear the static requirement comfortably. Dynamic load is the real constraint.

How to check your vehicle

1. Find your dynamic roof load Check your owner's manual under roof rack or roof load. If you can't find it, search your exact year, make, and model along with "dynamic roof load capacity", or call your dealership's parts department.
2. Find your rack's rating Check the manufacturer's specs for your crossbars. Factory bars and aftermarket bars from Thule, Yakima, Rhino-Rack and others all publish this.
3. Take the lower of the two That's your working limit. Compare it to the tent weights below.
4. Measure your crossbar spread Measure centre-to-centre between your front and rear bars. Your crossbars need to be at least 30 inches apart to mount any of our tents safely.

Common situations

My crossbars are closer than 30 inches

Many rack systems let you slide the bars further apart, so measure again with them repositioned before ruling anything out. If your vehicle's mounting points won't allow a 30 inch spread, your dealership's parts department can tell you what rack configurations are available for your vehicle.

My dynamic rating is lower than the tent weight

You have three options: choose a lighter tent, upgrade to a rack system with a higher rating if your vehicle allows it, or move to a bed rack if you drive a pickup. A bed rack mounts to the truck bed rather than the roof and typically carries far more.

I drive a pickup truck

A bed rack is usually the better answer than a roof mount — higher capacity, easier access, and it keeps the tent off your cab. Every tent we sell mounts to a standard bed rack.

My vehicle has no roof rails

Most vehicles can still take a rooftop tent using a clamp-on or track-mounted rack system. Contact your dealership's parts department with your year, make, and model — they can confirm which rack systems are approved for your vehicle and what those systems are rated to carry.

I have a soft top or a panoramic sunroof

Speak to your dealership before ordering. A panoramic sunroof typically makes it more difficult to find suitable roof rack options, and it often means a lower weight rating than the same vehicle without one. Your dealership can confirm both what racks are available for your specific configuration and what your roof is rated to carry.
